Fashion changes all the time and this is no less the case with items of jewelry. Different trends come and go, but there are always some things that remain timeless, things that will always remain in fashion. One such example is classic items of jewelry, often favored for their elegance and class, especially when it comes to more formal occasions. These timeless pieces can be bought at many stores, both in the high street and online, though some stores will specialize specifically in vintage items.

Antique rings, for example, are particularly popular as engagement rings or wedding rings. This is one area of jewelry which is not affected so much by changing trends since many women prefer the classy, old-fashioned elegance that is afforded by fine, vintage pieces. There was a transitional period between college and university when I worked at independent jeweller making silver rings by hand for sale in National Trust centres and small gift shops. I thought each silver ring would require ages to make, and you’d start and completely finish one ring before beginning another, how wrong I was. The silver ring making process was more like an assembly line so that uniformity and profitability were guaranteed and there was enough to meet surprise demand.

The first step of the process is rolling the bulk silver wire rolls into circular formations. A strong steel rod must be used for this part of the process. The raw silver wire is secured tightly at both ends and then using a twisting handle at the other end of the vice it is turned and wrapped tightly into a spiral until each turn of the spiral is as close to a ring shape as possible. The tapering is to make sure you end up with several rings of different sizes to cater for a variety of finger sizes.
